At that time, I wasn’t very interested in missions but that soon changed. We went on a short term mission trip to the Philippines. We helped in a little village called Isla. We helped give them medicines, and took care of them. We gave them food and our stuffed animals. Helping them gave us joy. What is a missionary? We all know that the disciples were followers of Jesus, right? But after Jesus ascended into Heaven, why were they preaching? Well, they could’ve just lived their “normal” life and just forgot about Jesus, but they did what Jesus asked them to do. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:18-20) So Jesus was telling them to preach, right? But Jesus was telling them to do more. He was turning them into something. He was turning them into missionaries. What do missionaries do? They help people. But you might ask, ‘which people are they supposed to help? The poor, the homeless, the refugees, the immigrants, or the rich?’ The missionary may answer all of them. You may say ‘why would you help the refugees? They can help themselves!’ or ‘I don’t need to help the poor! Others will help them!’ Well, if you say this, you are wrong. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) This bible verse doesn’t just mean dying for YOUR friend, or for someone you know that is related to you or your friend or for your friend’s friend. It means that you should die for anyone. But that does not mean that if someone tells you to jump off a cliff you should jump off a cliff. That means that you should do what Maximilian Kolbe did. When a man who had a family was going to be killed, he sacrificed himself instead of the man dying. There are eight rules for becoming an FMC Missionary. These are called the Missionary Heart. They are….
In conclusion, I love being a missionary. I think we did what Jesus asked his disciples to do, and what he asked us to do. I think we are doing the right thing.
