by Alex WildeWhat is a missionary? Is it an animal? Is it a machine? It is not even one of them. Then what is it? It is basically someone who loves God, loves others, does the corporal works of mercy, and does the spiritual works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy are feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the prisoners, bury the dead, and give alms to the poor. The spiritual works of mercy are counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving injuries, bearing wrongs patiently, and praying for the living and the dead. Do not be afraid to do works of mercy. You could be tortured like the disciples, but it is for God. His will be done. Jesus taught his apostles an important lesson in this gospel: Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep. Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave. As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you. Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words—go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.” (Matthew 10:5-15) One of the reasons I am a missionary is community. God calls us to be together. The more community you have the more friends you will help, and the more your friends will help you. Community can be just a smile, or waving hello. If you didn’t have community you would never even have loved your relatives. Community can be having peace with your brothers and sisters. Another reason is Jesus was a missionary. Every saint was a missionary. Paul was a missionary. Peter was a missionary. Every apostle of Jesus Christ was a missionary. Mary was a missionary. Mary Magdalene was a missionary. Joseph was a missionary and every beatified person was a missionary. Everyone must be a missionary, everyone can hear that call of Jesus and go forth and proclaim the Kingdom! - Pope Francis
